Jane Austen: Music and Dance

  • Alexandria Lyceum 201 South Washington Street Alexandria, VA, 22314 United States (map)

The Alexandria Chamber Music Society (ACMS) is collaborating with the Jane Austen Society of North America, D.C. chapter (JASNA-DC) and the Alexandria Assembly in celebration of the 250th anniversary of Austen's birth.

Jane was an accomplished pianist and avid concert-goer in London and Bath, and of course music and dancing are central activities for many of the characters in her novels. The program will include string quartets and chamber orchestra music by Joseph Haydn, Ignaz Pleyel, and Thomas Arne that Austen played or would have heard.

In addition, we will join the Austen family at home with Jane at the piano for some examples of English Country Dancing that Jane knew and played.

So please join us for a unique insight into the music and dance that was so important to Austen and to English Regency society at the turn of the 19th century! There will be opportunities for questions and answers, and all are welcome to stay for a short reception after the concert.

Tickets are now available exclusively on the JASNA-DC website for $15 (adults); tickets are free for children 12 and under. The Lyceum is a marvelous but small concert venue; to ensure everyone has a seat, you must order your tickets and reserve children’s seats online - there will be no ticket sales at the door.
